The Atlas computer, designed by Tom Kilburn together with a joint team from the University of Manchester and Ferranti Ltd., introduces the project's most significant feature: virtual memory, allowing memories of different speed and capacity to act as a single large, fast memory separately available to multiple users. Virtual memory becomes a standard feature of general-purpose computers.
