Stefan Banach publishes Théorie des opérations linéaires, the foundational work of modern functional analysis systematizing complete normed vector spaces (Banach spaces), bounded linear operators, and fundamental theorems such as Hahn-Banach and the open mapping theorem. The book defines the Banach-space classification program Gowers would partially complete in 1996.
