First spinal anesthesia — August Bier

In 1898, August Bier performed the first operations with spinal anesthesia by injecting cocaine into the subarachnoid space. This innovation enabled painless procedures on the lower extremities with the patient conscious. Neuraxial anesthesia became, from then on, its own technical family within anesthesiology.
