Commentaries on the Laws of England — William Blackstone

1765 AD · Transmission: Global
LawLegalBritish

Blackstone's merit was not inventing English law but ordering utter chaos: until then Common Law was a disordered heap of medieval judgments, local customs, and acts in Latin, Old French, and Law French. By packaging this history into clear, accessible language, Blackstone created the legal manual American colonists read to defend "the rights of Englishmen" against George III.
