Discovery of the hepatitis B surface antigen — Baruch Blumberg

Blumberg discovers the Australia antigen (HBsAg), the surface marker of the hepatitis B virus — the first molecularly identified etiological agent of viral hepatitis, enabling serological tests for blood screening. Harvey Alter, a direct NIH collaborator, extends this surveillance program to identify a third agent responsible for remaining post-transfusion hepatitis.
