Ludwig Boltzmann develops statistical mechanics and formulates S = k log W, relating macroscopic entropy to the number of compatible microstates. He establishes the microscopic basis of the second law of thermodynamics and justifies irreversibility from Newtonian mechanics. His work was ignored or attacked during his lifetime; the constant k bears his name.
