In 1896, Budapest Metro Line No. 1 was inaugurated — the first underground railway designed specifically to use electric power, rather than adapted from a steam-powered system. It introduced several original technical elements, including bidirectional motor carriages and the 'goose neck chassis,' plus electric lighting in stations and carriages. Its design influenced the construction of later subway lines in Boston, Paris, Berlin, and other major cities.
