Sadi Carnot publishes Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu, establishing the Carnot cycle as the theoretical efficiency limit of any heat engine. He shows that maximum efficiency depends only on the temperatures of the hot and cold reservoirs, founding classical thermodynamics and anticipating the second law.
