Cai Lun (a Han court official) refines the process of papermaking using tree bark, hemp, rags, and fishing nets. There is archaeological evidence of crude paper from the 2nd century BC, but Cai Lun systematizes and improves the process. Paper reached Europe via the Arab route ~12th century — 1000 years after its invention.
