First vulcanized rubber condom — British manufacturers

~1855 AD · Transmission: Global
MedicineInventionBritish

Around 1855, European manufacturers — mainly British — began industrially producing vulcanized rubber condoms, applying Goodyear's process (1839) to the manufacture of barrier methods. Unlike Falloppio's linen sheaths, these condoms were reusable, more durable, and available in volume. Their mass production turned barrier methods into a consumer product, although their use remained legally and socially restricted in many countries for decades.
