In 1942, Griffith and Johnson introduced curare as a neuromuscular relaxant during general anesthesia, radically changing abdominal and thoracic surgery. Muscle relaxation no longer had to depend on dangerously deepening inhalational anesthesia. This milestone consolidated balanced anesthesia as the technical paradigm of the 20th century.
