Abraham Darby smelts iron with mineral coke instead of charcoal at Coalbrookdale, resolving wood scarcity and enabling larger, hotter blast furnaces. The resulting cheap, abundant cast iron became an indispensable raw material of the Industrial Revolution and a direct prerequisite for the Bessemer process.
