Identification of the analgesic effect of nitrous oxide — Humphry Davy

1799 AD · Transmission: Global
MedicineTheoryBritish

Humphry Davy observed experimentally that nitrous oxide relieved pain and put in writing the possibility of applying it to surgical operations. Although the medicine of his time did not immediately translate that observation into clinical practice, his formulation anticipated modern Western inhalational anesthesia. His contribution is conceptual and physiological rather than surgical.
