W.K.L. Dickson, working at Thomas Edison's West Orange laboratories, develops the kinetoscope: an individual-viewing device projecting perforated celluloid film through a lens. Principal authorship belongs to Dickson; Edison was the lab director and patent holder. Unlike the Lumière cinematograph, the kinetoscope was for a single viewer at a time, with no public projection.
