Thomas Edison invents the phonograph, the first device able to record and play back sound via a stylus recording vibrations on a tinfoil cylinder. The first documented recording is Edison's own voice reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb", establishing the principle of mechanical sound reproduction that gave rise to the recording industry.
