A mathematician active in Hellenistic Alexandria, Euclid compiled in the Elements the first axiomatic-deductive system of geometry, rigorously proving hundreds of propositions of plane and solid geometry, number theory, and proportions. Transmitted to the Arab world via successive translations and thence to Latin Europe via Gerard of Cremona in the 12th century.
