MaterialsInventionBritish

Geim and Novoselov isolate graphene using adhesive tape (the "Scotch tape" technique). A single-atom-thick sheet of carbon in a hexagonal lattice: stronger than steel, a better conductor than copper, nearly fully transparent. Thinnest material ever isolated. Opens the era of 2D materials.
