First surgical correction of a congenital heart defect — ligation of the ductus arteriosus — Robert Gross

1938 AD · Transmission: Global
MedicineMethodNorth American

Robert Gross performed in 1938 the first successful surgical correction of a congenital heart defect by ligating a patent ductus arteriosus in a seven-year-old patient. The procedure did not access the interior of the heart, but it demonstrated that congenital cardiovascular malformations were surgically correctable with reproducible results. With it, organized pediatric cardiovascular surgery begins and the extracardiac period of the specialty opens.
