MathematicsTheoryGermanic

Felix Hausdorff published in Mathematische Annalen (March 1918) the formalization of non-integer dimension and the exterior measure bearing his name, generalizing length, area, and volume to fractional values. Considered by the mathematical community of his time an abstraction with no application, Mandelbrot rescued it decades later as the cornerstone of fractal geometry.
