Stratospheric suit — Emilio Herrera Linares

1935 AD · Transmission: Silenced
TechnologyInventionHispanic

The military engineer Emilio Herrera Linares, from Granada, designed in 1935 the first documented stratospheric suit: a pressurized suit for extreme-altitude flights with temperature regulation, autonomous oxygen supply, and joints allowing movement. The design principles are identical to those of the astronaut suits developed by NASA and the USSR in the 1960s. The project was cancelled by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, and Herrera went into exile in France, where he continued working but without the resources to implement the design. His contribution is recognized in Spanish aeronautical historiography, although it did not directly influence Cold War space programs.
