1981 AD · Transmission: Global
AstronomyDiscoveryNorth American

Kirshner, Oemler, Schechter, and Shectman discover the Boötes Void, a region ~330 million light-years across nearly empty of galaxies, during a galaxy redshift survey. It is the first identified supervoid in the universe, and forced a reconsideration of the model of homogeneous galaxy distribution at large scales.
