Introduction of local anesthesia with cocaine — Carl Koller

Karl Koller demonstrated in 1884 that cocaine could produce local anesthesia useful for eye surgery. With this he inaugurated modern local anesthesia and opened a new technical branch distinct from inhalational general anesthesia. His finding changed the practice of ophthalmology and laid the groundwork for later regional anesthesia.
