A body of laws found on clay tablets in ancient Assur, reflecting the social order of one of the most militarized civilizations of the ancient Near East. They severely regulate sexual offenses, forced abortion, property, and inheritance, and introduce in writing for the first time the obligatory veil distinguishing married or free women from slaves and prostitutes.
