Pierre de Maricourt (Petrus Peregrinus) writes the Epistola de magnete during the siege of Lucera, the first systematic European treatise on magnetism. He identifies for the first time the north and south poles of a magnet, demonstrates that like poles repel and unlike poles attract, and describes experiments with spherical magnets. It was the European magnetic reference until Gilbert.
