Pierre Michaux adds pedals to the front-wheel axle of Drais's Laufmaschine, creating the velocipede, the first bicycle with direct mechanical propulsion. The model's commercial success was immediate in Paris and founded the European cycling industry, direct precursor of the chain-driven rear-wheel bicycle and the light automobile.
