Tsutomu Miyasaka published in 2009 the first application of organic-metal halide perovskites as light absorbers in solar cells, achieving an initial efficiency of 3.8%. The work opened a field that in less than fifteen years surpassed 25% efficiency, matching crystalline silicon at a fraction of the manufacturing cost. It is one of the most cited papers in the recent history of solar energy. Miyasaka has appeared on the Clarivate lists of Nobel pre-candidates since 2017. As of this entry, he has not received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, even as the energy and economic impact of his discovery is already comparable to that of Nobel-winning inventions.
