First successful public demonstration of ether anesthesia — William Morton

On 16 October 1846, Morton administered ether in a public operation that convinced the medical community of the viability of pain-free surgery. The speed with which this demonstration spread made it the turning point for the worldwide acceptance of anesthesia.
