Newton publishes Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. Unifies terrestrial mechanics and astronomy. Governs physics until Einstein. Calculus (developed in parallel with Leibniz) is the underlying mathematical tool.
