In February 2014 the OpenID Foundation publishes OpenID Connect (OIDC), an identity layer built on OAuth 2.0 adding the authentication component OAuth lacked. OIDC's ID Token, a cryptographically signed JWT, provides verifiable user identity information, standardizing global Single Sign-On. Led by Nat Sakimura with John Bradley, Michael B. Jones, and others, OIDC becomes the de facto standard of modern federated identity, powering the "Continue with Google/Apple" button.
