Max Planck resolves the ultraviolet catastrophe of black-body radiation by postulating that energy is emitted in discrete packets (quanta) of value E=hν, introducing Planck's constant h. It is the founding act of quantum physics, though Planck himself initially considered it a mathematical device with no physical reality.
