Propofol was developed by John B. Glen at ICI in 1973 as a fast-acting intravenous anesthetic with clean recovery. Its pharmacological profile favored ambulatory surgery and total intravenous anesthesia, progressively replacing thiopental. It is one of the most influential drugs in contemporary anesthesia.
