First modern intrauterine device — Richard Richter

MedicineInventionGermanic

In 1909, the German physician Richard Richter published the first description of a modern intrauterine device: a ring made of silkworm gut placed in the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy. The concept was correct and the mechanism worked, but his work circulated within a very restricted circle and had no immediate continuation. The IUD as a contraceptive technology would be taken up again two decades later by Gräfenberg.
