Introduction of chloroform in obstetric anesthesia — James Young Simpson

James Young Simpson introduced chloroform as an anesthetic and applied it in obstetrics, opening the door to labor analgesia and broader social acceptance of anesthesia. His public advocacy for relieving labor pain had a cultural as well as medical impact. Chloroform thus became a key alternative agent to ether.
