Hydraulic lime and the principle of hydraulic cement — John Smeaton

1756 AD · Transmission: Global
EngineeringMaterialsMethodBritish

Smeaton conducts systematic mortar trials for rebuilding the Eddystone Lighthouse, empirically identifying that lime mixed with clay produces a binder that sets underwater and is stronger than pure lime — the first modern experimental investigation into hydraulic cement properties, establishing the technical principle (calcined argillaceous limestone) Aspdin later patents as Portland cement (1824).
