AC electrification with transformers — William Stanley

1886 AD · Transmission: Global
EnergyEngineeringInventionNorth American

On March 20, 1886, William Stanley provided alternating current electrification to offices and stores on Main Street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. It was the first demonstration of a practical AC lighting system using transformers to adjust voltage levels along the distribution network. This system solved the core limitation of Edison's DC — voltage drop over distance — opening the path to long-range electrification.
