Steinway & Sons introduces overstringing, placing the bass strings diagonally over the treble strings to optimize the soundboard. Combined with the cast-iron frame and double escapement mechanism, it establishes the 88-key (7 1/4 octave) design that remains the worldwide standard of the concert grand piano.
