Pure isolation of adrenaline — Jokichi Takamine

1901 AD · Transmission: Disputed
MedicineMethodJapanese

Jokichi Takamine first isolated adrenaline in pure, crystalline form from adrenal glands, coining the name "adrenaline." His work (1901) enabled stable pharmaceutical production of the hormone and its clinical use. Cybulski had identified the vasopressor activity of adrenal extracts in 1895; Oliver and Schäfer independently described the same effects in 1894. Takamine does not discover the substance — he isolates it in pure form and names it.
