From Harran and a member of the Sabian sect, trilingual in Syriac, Greek, and Arabic, Thabit ibn Qurra worked in Baghdad under Caliph al-Mu'tadid revising Ishaq ibn Hunayn's translations of Euclid's Elements and Ptolemy's Almagest, and translated works of Archimedes and Apollonius of Perga.
