In papers from 1997 and 2006, Waldspurger showed that validating Langlands's Fundamental Lemma for global p-adic groups reduced to solving its local variant for Lie algebras of positive characteristic. This reduction transformed a harmonic-analysis problem into one of pure algebraic geometry and cleared the path for Ngô Bảo Châu's 2008 proof.
