1844 AD · Transmission: Global
MedicineMethodNorth American

Horace Wells used nitrous oxide to perform painless dental extractions, demonstrating that an inhaled gas could abolish pain perception in invasive procedures. His contribution was decisive in dentistry and in the clinical conceptualization of inhalational anesthesia. Although a failed demonstration tarnished his reputation, his place as a pioneer of nitrous oxide is solidly established.
